SENSEDANCE & Henning Rübsam

Choreographer/dancer Henning Rübsam directs SENSEDANCE, a New York City-based dance company, presenting annual NYC seasons since 1992. The company offers ensemble, solo, and duet programs as well as site-specific work, master classes, residencies, and workshops. The company supports composer/choreographer collaborations and endeavors to further the dialogue between dancers, musicians, designers, and the audience. SENSEDANCE has been created in the hope that through the SENSES for a moment we can still all meet.

Since he began to choreograph in 1984, Rübsam created over seventy works, staging and performing them in Australasia, Central and South America, Europe and the U.S.

A "dance sensation" & "the choreographer to watch," his work has been described as "exquisite" (Village Voice), "glorious" (NY Times) and critic Jennifer Dunning headlined a review in the New York Times:

The versatile Rübsam also directs and choreographs for opera and theater and was the subject of television and film documentaries in both the U.S. and his native Germany.

He has been awarded government, foundation and corporate grants as well as the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen- und Halbach Prize, the Lincoln Center Fellowship, and the DRA Award among many others. In 2009 he received Bergen Community College’s “DISTINGUISHED ARTIST AWARD” and is the first dance artist to be so honored.

On faculty at his alma mater The Juilliard School since 2006, he is the RESIDENT CHOREOGRAPHER of the Hartford City Ballet and guest faculty of the Texas Academy of Ballet. In February ‘08 he was a guest teacher for Ballet Nacional del Peru and the Universidad de Lima.

As a performer he has toured internationally with the Limón Dance Company, Duncan Macfarland's DanceArtCompany and was a member of Alwin Nikolais/Murray Louis Dance. In May 2010 he was part of the NIKOLAIS Centennial in NYC. He danced in the works of modern dance legends Doris Humphrey, Anna Sokolow and Isadora Duncan and appeared with a myriad of contemporary choreographers, incl. the delightful Beverly Blossom. He starred in Prufrock, a dance film produced at Robert Redford's Sundance Institute, performed as Nijinsky's Faune and collaborates regularly with photographer Antonio Yussif in Mexico City.

Rübsam is a board member of the Martha Hill Dance Fund and a writer on dance and the arts. An article about his guest residency in Moscow, ID was published in Dance Magazine. He has contributed to Ballet Review, Pointe Magazine and was the American correspondent of Dance For You magazine.

An advocate for his art form, he was the first dance artist to speak at the annual international GEL conference ( in 2007 and is invited back in 2011. In 2009 Rübsam gave a lecture on modern dance for the Young Patrons Program at Lincoln Center in New York City.

For his mentor Prima Ballerina Assoluta Eva Evdokimova he created Litanei und Frühlingsglaube (music: Schubert) of which The New York Times said: "Both the solo and her performance were celebrations of the kind of artistry that comes only with maturity and experience."

Henning Rübsam tours a solo program that includes works to live and original music. He is available as a guest choreographer, performer and lecturer and is a sought-after master teacher for dance technique and dance composition.
